History of Saint Clair Castle
“The princes of Talmont (XIVth or XVth century) were at the origin of the castle. After a conflict between Catholic and Huguenot armies ( 1622) and the destruction of its walls in 1689, the castle fell into ruins.
The Tower is also a lighthouse which was the only lighthouse on the coasts of Vendee until the end of the 18 th century.
Later between 1986 and 1994 the castle was restored by Jacques Boissière” (Extract from Les Sables d’Olonne Town hall)
